Learning Journal – May 2019

“I am an academic person myself, and I really enjoy studying so the classroom learning time has been great for me. I have liked the fact that we have had time in the classroom studying directly for the apprenticeship, as well as having the opportunity to take part in courses that benefit my work within the classroom. I have had the opportunity to expand my knowledge and have completed courses in Mental Health and Well-being, as well as Risk Assessment. Our Tutor Sarah is someone that is approachable and you can talk to about work and college openly without a worry. From the minute of meeting at interview, to being a tutor, to coming out to the school setting.

The setting I am working in has been amazing, they have supported me in my education and achieving my qualification within my apprenticeship, while also encouraging me with my future and going on to university. From my first inset day in September, all members of staff have welcomed me and have treated me as an equal.

From studying at System People Education, I have established a passion for working with children. After studying my level 2, there was an option to go on and progress to my level 3, however to further my education and career, I have secured a place at the University of Cumbria to study Primary Education with QTS. From there, I look forward to a career as a teacher and all that it will bring me.

My favorite part of the apprenticeship was having the opportunity to give something back to the community by doing a sponsored walk up Catbells. We as a group raised over £370 for CFM’s Cash For Kids and it really gave a sense of achievement and pride in both finishing the walk, as well as helping those children around us all who may be in need.

Doing an apprenticeship is great, because you get to gain the experience on the job while you gain a qualification. I would say go for it, but you will only get out of it what you put into it.  The written work outside of the classroom setting isn’t too much alongside your work if you use your time in the classroom wisely.

I would 100% recommend an apprenticeship through System People. As well as being a place for our learning to achieve our qualifications and complete our apprenticeships, it is a safe place to be able to talk to anyone of any issues or problems, whether it be work/college related or a personal one. Sarah and the rest of the team are there to listen and help you out. From the minute I started with System, I felt like part of a family. I and the rest of the apprentices in my class were all in a group chat within the first day of meeting. We are not just ‘college’ friends, we have been on nights out and out for food during social gatherings.”
