Specialist Teaching Assistant Level 5

This Level 5 apprenticeship (equivalent to a foundation degree) is designed for experienced Teaching Assistants looking to take on a more senior or specialist role in school. Whether you support pupils with SEND, focus on emotional wellbeing, or lead on a subject area, this programme helps you build the expertise and confidence to lead support strategies and improve pupil outcomes.

You’ll learn how to:

• Plan and adapt learning activities using research and reflective practice
• Lead specialist support in areas like SEND, wellbeing or curriculum
• Work effectively with colleagues, families, and external professionals
• Support the professional development of others in your setting
• Promote inclusion, belonging and positive relationships in school

Programme details

• Duration: Typically 15 to 18 months, plus up to 12 weeks for End Point Assessment (EPA)
• Delivery: Monthly live tutor-led Zoom sessions, supported self-study, and 1-to-1 tutorials
• Online learning: Digital modules delivered through our interactive learning platform
• Reviews: Regular 1-to-1 reviews and workplace observations to track progress

Who is it for?

This apprenticeship is ideal for experienced Teaching Assistants who want to:

How Long Does It Take?

• The apprenticeship typically takes 15 to 18 months to complete
• Followed by a 12-week End Point Assessment (EPA) period
• Includes monthly online group sessions, supported self-study, and 1-to-1 tutorials

What Happens at the End?

• Your End Point Assessment includes a portfolio of evidence (15 pieces), a professional observation, and a question-and-answer session
• You’ll be awarded a Pass, Merit, or Distinction based on your performance

What Happens After?

Once qualified, you’ll be ready to:

• Take on a senior or specialist teaching assistant role
• Support pupils with SEND, wellbeing, or subject-specific needs
• Progress to Level 6 study or a teacher training pathway
