Our Early Years Apprenticeship Programmes
Each apprenticeship is delivered through a mix of workplace learning, online classrooms, and face-to-face visits. Our delivery is designed to fit around the routines and demands of busy early years settings. Read on to see the Early Years programmes we offer:
Level 2 Early Years Practitioner
Ideal for: People just starting their career in early years
Duration: Typically 12-14 months
Entry requirements: GCSE Grade 2/E (or equivalent) in maths & English is desirable. If candidates don’t already hold a Grade 4/C or above in these subjects, support will given to them to achieve functional skills qualifications.
This entry-level apprenticeship provides the foundation for working with babies and young children from birth to 5 years old. Apprentices learn how to support children’s development, build secure attachments, and create a safe, stimulating environment for play and learning.
Key topics include:
- Child development and early brain development
- Safeguarding and welfare
- Supporting speech, language, and communication
- Working as part of a team in a nursery or preschool
- Health, safety, and hygiene
Outcome: After completing this programme, apprentices can progress onto the Level 3 Early Years Educator apprenticeship or work as a level 2 practitioner
Level 3 Early Years Educator
Ideal for: Early Years practitioners with a Level 2 qualification or equivalent experience
Duration: Typically 15–18 months
Entry requirements: Ideally Grade 4/C GCSEs in English and maths (or Functional Skills can be completed during the programme)
This advanced apprenticeship develops skilled practitioners who play a key role in supporting children’s learning and development. Apprentices will plan and lead activities, work independently with small groups, and contribute to observation and assessment.
Key topics include:
- Planning, leading and evaluating play-based learning
- Understanding child development from birth to 5 years and transitions to school
- Promoting emotional well-being and resilience
- Equality, diversity, and inclusive practice
- Partnership working with parents and carers
Outcome: Level 3 Early Years Educator qualification. With more experience, you could take on greater responsibility as a Room Leader or Senior Practitioner. If you’re interested in further training, you could progress to a Level 5 Early Years Lead Practitioner apprenticeship
Level 5 Early Years Lead Practitioner
Ideal for: Experienced practitioners or room leaders ready to step into leadership
Duration: Typically 18–24 months
Entry requirements: Significant early years experience and/or Level 3 qualification
This higher-level apprenticeship is designed for those looking to lead practice across their setting. Apprentices gain deep knowledge of pedagogy, curriculum development, and leadership – preparing them for roles such as Senior Practitioner or Deputy Manager.
Key topics include:
- Leading and evaluating effective practice
- Developing curriculum and planning for learning
- Coaching and mentoring other staff
- Monitoring outcomes for children
- Setting goals and driving quality improvement
Outcome: Level 5 qualification with knowledge and skills to progress to leadership roles.
