Explore our frequently asked questions below to learn more about how apprenticeships work, employer responsibilities, and how we can help you get started.

Why should I hire an apprentice?

Apprenticeships provide a cost-effective way to develop new talent, fill skills gaps, and invest in the future workforce. Apprentices bring fresh ideas, enthusiasm, and the opportunity to train employees to fit your needs.

How does apprenticeship funding work?

Apprenticeships are funded through the Apprenticeship Levy or government co-investment. If your school or business pays the Apprenticeship Levy, you can use these funds to cover training costs. Non-levy employers typically pay 5% of the training costs, with the government covering the remaining 95%.

What are my responsibilities as an employer?

Employers must provide apprentices with meaningful work experience, supervision, and support to develop their skills. You’ll also need to allow time for off-the-job training (typically 6 hours per week).

Apprentices need mentor support from a member of staff they work alongside regularly. Mentors offer support, attend quarterly tripartite reviews and contribute towards the assessments, such as completing witness testimonies and an employer review.

Employers are also responsible for Safer Recruitment checks (DBS, RTW and referencing etc).

What is a Flexi-Job Apprenticeship Agency and do I need to use one?

A Flexi-Job Apprenticeship Agency (FJAA) employs apprentices on your behalf and places them with your school. This means you benefit from an apprentice without needing to handle employment contracts, payroll, or HR compliance. Voluntary Aided schools may struggle to access apprenticeship levy funding. You can find out more about FJAAs here

How long does an apprenticeship last?

Apprenticeships typically last between 12 and 24 months, depending on the level and sector. Higher-level apprenticeships may take longer.
