Supply Teacher
As a Supply Teacher, you’ll play a vital role in maintaining continuity in the classroom when regular teachers are absent. You’ll have the opportunity to work in primary or secondary schools, teaching a variety of subjects and age groups. This role requires a strong ability to adapt quickly to different school environments and effectively manage classrooms, ensuring students stay engaged and on track with their learning.
Supply teaching provides flexibility, allowing you to choose the days you work and the schools you work in, while still making a meaningful contribution to student development. In addition to your classroom teaching duties, you may also be asked to carry out administrative tasks such as marking, setting up classroom materials, and communicating with school staff about student progress. While QTS is generally required for supply teachers, schools may consider candidates with equivalent qualifications or significant experience in education.
Qualification Needed: Yes, Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is typically required.
Teaching Assistant
As a Teaching Assistant (TA), you’ll provide direct support to teachers and students, enhancing the learning experience in the classroom. Your duties may include assisting with lesson delivery, helping students with their work, and managing classroom activities. You could be expected to provide one-on-one support for students who may need extra help or have special educational needs.
TAs are essential in helping students develop both academically and socially, and your role may also extend to supervising students during lunch breaks or break time. In addition to supporting classroom activities, you’ll also be responsible for preparing resources, marking work, and sometimes helping to organise extra-curricular activities. Although formal qualifications such as a Level 2 or 3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning (or equivalent) are beneficial, the role is also open to those with strong interpersonal skills and a passion for education.
Qualification Needed: No formal qualification is required, though experience or relevant certifications can be helpful.
Learning Support Assistant
As a Learning Support Assistant (LSA), you’ll play a key role in supporting students with additional learning needs, ensuring they have the right support to succeed in the classroom. Whether working one-on-one with students or assisting small groups, LSAs are instrumental in helping students with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND) overcome barriers to learning.
Your responsibilities may include adapting lesson materials to suit the needs of individual students, supporting students with personal care, and ensuring their social and emotional well-being in the school environment. You will also work closely with teachers to implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and support the delivery of tailored learning activities.
While experience working with SEND students or qualifications in learning support (e.g., a Level 2 or 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning) are advantageous, your compassion, patience, and ability to adapt are just as important. An LSA’s role is both fulfilling and rewarding, as you’ll have the opportunity to make a positive difference in a student’s educational experience.
Qualification Needed: No formal qualification required, though experience or relevant training in SEND is beneficial.
Cover Supervisor
Cover Supervisors take on the responsibility of managing a class when a teacher is absent, ensuring that students stay on task and engage with pre-set lessons. This role requires strong classroom management skills, as you’ll be supervising students across various subjects and year groups, and ensuring a positive, productive learning environment.
While you won’t be expected to teach the lesson, you will need to ensure that students complete their work to a high standard. You’ll also need to handle administrative duties such as monitoring attendance, providing feedback to teachers, and ensuring that classroom resources are used appropriately. A background in education or experience in classroom management is important, and many cover supervisors benefit from additional training in managing behaviour and supporting students with special needs.
Qualification Needed: No formal teaching qualification required, but classroom experience is essential.
Administration Roles
If you’re organised, detail-oriented, and enjoy working behind the scenes or ‘Front of House’, school administration roles are an excellent way to support the school’s operations and help create an efficient, positive environment for both staff and students. As a School Administrator you’ll be responsible for a range of tasks, including managing student records, organising meetings, answering phones, and supporting the day-to-day administration of the school. This is a varied and rewarding role, 2 days are never the same.
These roles may involve working closely with teachers and other staff to ensure that resources are organised, communication is smooth, and student data is up to date. In larger schools, you might assist in scheduling and coordinating school events or managing correspondence between parents and school staff. Strong communication skills, an eye for detail, and proficiency in office software are essential, and while specific qualifications in administration are not required, they are highly advantageous.
Qualification Needed: No formal qualification is required, though experience in office administration is beneficial.
