Howgill’s Mission: We work to improve the lives of children, families, and their communities in North Copeland.
We provide distinctive services to children and families, based on trusting relationships. Our services are accessible, and care is taken to include the most disadvantaged. We specialise in providing early help and emphasize prevention. We develop innovative approaches to family support.
Our approach is collaborative. Families are at the centre of what we do, and we have high expectations of the adults in the relationship. There is a recognition that people with whom we work have responsibilities too – to act safely and responsibly. We work in constructive partnerships with a very wide range of organisations across the public, private and voluntary sectors.
Our aim is to foster greater independence and resilience. We believe people can address the issues they face – recognising that they need support in the forms of information, skills, and confidence to enable them to do so. We will enable people, when they are ready, to move beyond the point where our support is required. We encourage former service users to become volunteers, sponsors and patrons.

Howgill Family Centre, Cleator Moor, is offering an apprenticeship for a caring and enthusiastic Early Years Practitioner to join their team. This is an ideal opportunity to start your career as a L2 Early Years Practitioner or develop whilst working towards a L3 Early Years Educator.
Howgill Family Centre is a well-established local charity that has been supporting children and families across West Cumbria for over 40 years. Their nurseries provide welcoming, nurturing environments where children can learn, play and develop through a wide range of engaging experiences.
Based in Cleator Moor, the nursery caters for children aged 0 to 5 years in a purpose built provision offering well equipped indoor and outdoor spaces.
The nursery offers a variety of opportunities for children to explore, discover and develop their communication, social and emotional skills through play and hands-on learning.
Staff work closely with local schools to support children as they prepare for their next stage of education.
As an apprentice, you will work alongside experienced practitioners while studying towards your Early Years qualification, gaining valuable knowledge and practical experience in a supportive environment.

This apprenticeship will provide you with the skills, knowledge and experience needed to begin or develop a career in Early Years education.
On successful completion of the apprenticeship, there may be the opportunity to progress into a permanent role within Howgill Family Centre. You may also have the chance to continue your professional development through further Early Years qualifications and training.
Training & Development
You will attend live tutor led sessions 2 days every month (1 day every other week which will be via ZOOM) and participate in online interactive learning via our bespoke innovative platform OLLIE. Your Tutor will also visit you in the workplace for 1-2-1 Tutor sessions during the programme.
Entry Requirements
You will need to have achieved a GCSE grade 4/C (or equivalent) in Maths and English by the end of this programme. Therefore, if you do not already hold a grade 4/C in these subjects, you will be required to carry out a short Maths and English Assessment to see if we are able to offer you Functional Skills support to reach a Level 2 (grade C/4 equivalent).
